[[Blaise Pascal]] propose alors une expérience : il reproduit celle de Toricelli en bas et en haut d'une montagne (expérience du Puy de Dôme, 1648). Il montre que la hauteur du mercure est plus basse en haut de la montagne, ce qui montre que c'est bien la diminution de la pression atmosphérique qui cause cette diminution, et donc que la physique est plutôt régie par les lois de la pression plutôt que par un principe d'horreur du vide. Pascal parle d'une "horreur imaginaire du vide". Il fustige un certain antropomorphisme.
On distingue alors les bonnes explications des explications imaginaires. L'imagination, pour Pascal, désigne un certain principe général de représentation des images, qui va chercher à soumettre la nature à nos représentation, à faire rentrer les phénomènes dans nos idées, à *réduire le possible à l'imaginable* ; ce qui s'oppose à la connaissance scientifique, à laquelle on accède par l'expérience : seule l'expérience nous donne accès aux *principes de la nature* (auxquels on a accès seulement indirectement, par leurs effets, et par la construction de dispositifs expérimentaux qui font voir ces effets).
Lorsque l'on boît une paille, pourquoi le liquide monte-t-il dans la paille ? C'est que, en aspirant, on fait diminuer la pression en haut de la paille, ce qui déplace le niveau d'équilibre.
C'est cette théorie qui explique pourquoi les pompes ne réussissent pas à faire monter l'eau plus haut que 10m : au delà, même une pression nulle au dessus de la colonne d'eau ne suffit pas à faire monter l'eau, puisque le poids de la colonne d'eau de 10m égale la pression atmosphérique, et l'équilibre est atteint.
